1765 में बक्सर के युद्ध के उपरांत इलाहाबाद की संधि के माध्यम से रॉबर्ट क्लाइव ने बंगाल में द्वैध शासन प्रणाली लागू की। इस व्यवस्था के अंतर्गत ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के पास दीवानी (राजस्व वसूली) के अधिकार थे, जबकि निजामत (प्रशासन एवं कानून-व्यवस्था) का उत्तरदायित्व नवाब के पास था। इस कुख्यात प्रणाली को 1772 में वारेन हेस्टिंग्स ने समाप्त किया।

The dual system of governance in Bengal was enforced by
Robert Clive introduced the Dual System of Governance (Diarchy) in Bengal after the Treaty of Allahabad in 1765 following the Battle of Buxar. Under this system, the East India Company held Diwani (revenue administration) rights while the Nawab retained Nizamat (executive administrative) responsibilities. This system was later abolished by Warren Hastings in 1772.
