How is the atmosphere mainly heated?
The Earth's atmosphere is largely transparent to incoming short-wave solar radiation (insolation). After the Earth's surface absorbs insolation, it radiates energy back into space as long-wave infrared terrestrial radiation, which is strongly absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, thereby heating the atmosphere from below.
