'स्वदेशी' और 'बहिष्कार' को पहली बार जन-संघर्ष के प्रभावी साधनों के रूप में वर्ष 1905 के 'बंगाल विभाजन विरोधी आंदोलन' (स्वदेशी आंदोलन) के दौरान अपनाया गया था। लॉर्ड कर्जन द्वारा किए गए बंगाल विभाजन के विरोध में 7 अगस्त 1905 को कलकत्ता के टाउन हॉल में स्वदेशी आंदोलन की औपचारिक घोषणा हुई थी।
