भारत में पहली बार कोयले का व्यावसायिक खनन 1774 ई. में पश्चिम बंगाल के दामोदर घाटी क्षेत्र में स्थित 'रानीगंज' में शुरू हुआ था। ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के अधिकारी जॉन समनर और सुएटोनियस ग्रांट हीटली ने रानीगंज कोयला क्षेत्र में पहला खनन कार्य शुरू किया था।
