Where was the Ryotwari system first implemented?
The Ryotwari system was a land revenue settlement first introduced on an experimental basis in the Baramahal district of Madras Presidency by Alexander Read in 1792. It was later thoroughly developed and implemented across the Madras Presidency by Governor Thomas Munro in 1820. Unlike the Zamindari system, it established direct relations between the colonial government and the cultivators (ryots) for tax assessment.
