Karewas are thick, lacustrine (lake) sedimentary terraces and alluvial deposits found in the Kashmir Valley, formed during the Pleistocene epoch. They possess rich, fertile silty clay soil uniquely conducive to the cultivation of Zafran (Saffron), along with almonds and walnuts.
