भारत में पहली बार जनगणना की शुरुआत वर्ष 1872 में वायसराय लॉर्ड मेयो के कार्यकाल में हुई थी। यह एक गैर-समकालिक जनगणना थी। इसके पश्चात वर्ष 1881 में लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल से प्रत्येक दस वर्ष पर नियमित और समकालिक जनगणना कराने की प्रथा प्रारंभ हुई।
