Raj Kumar Shukla, a local indigo farmer from Champaran, persistently persuaded Mahatma Gandhi to visit Champaran and investigate the grievances of indigo cultivators. He met Gandhiji during the 1916 Lucknow session of the Indian National Congress. His constant efforts eventually led to Gandhiji's historic Champaran Satyagraha in 1917.
