The Qutub Minar's construction was initiated by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, who could only complete its basement level. It was completed by his successor and son-in-law, Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, who added three more storeys to the structure. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq repaired the top floors after they were damaged by lightning.
