गंडक नदी को नेपाल और बिहार के मैदानी भागों में इसके पौराणिक और पवित्र नाम 'नारायणी' (Narayani) के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इसके ऊपरी पर्वतीय प्रवाह में शालिग्राम पत्थरों के मिलने के कारण इसे शालिग्रामी भी कहा जाता है।
