Tughril Khan, the governor of Bengal appointed by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Balban, declared independence and assumed the title Sultan Mughis-ud-din in 1279 AD. Enraged by this treason, Balban personally marched a vast army to Bengal, captured Tughril Khan near the river Meghna, and beheaded him along with hundreds of his rebel supporters in Lakhnauti bazaar.
