- Geological Definition: A long, narrow, shallow, and subsiding marine depression or water trough in the Earth's crust in which continuous sediment deposition and gradual subsidence occur over millions of years.
- Orogenesis: Lateral tectonic compression folds these accumulated sediments into Fold Mountains (e.g., Tethys Geosyncline folded into the Himalayas - Kober's Geosyncline Theory).

- भू-वैज्ञानिक परिभाषा: पृथ्वी की भूपर्पटी में स्थित एक लंबा, संकरा, उथला तथा निरंतर धंसने वाला जलमग्न गर्त, जिसमें लंबे समय तक अवसादों का निक्षेपण व तली का धंसाव होता है।
- पर्वत निर्माण: कोबर के सिद्धांत अनुसार, इन अवसादों पर दोनों ओर से संपीडन बल लगने से वलित पर्वतों का निर्माण होता है (उदा. टेथिस भूसन्नति से हिमालय की उत्पत्ति)।
