Model Answer

Reasons for Historically High Fertility Rate in India:

Although India's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has recently declined to the replacement level of 2.0 (NFHS-5), high fertility historically persisted due to entrenched socio-economic and cultural drivers:

  • Universal and Early Marriage: Cultural norms mandating early marriage for girls, resulting in a long reproductive life-span.
  • Patriarchal Son Preference: Cultural desire for male heirs to carry the family lineage and perform funeral rites, leading to repeated pregnancies until a son is born.
  • High Infant and Child Mortality (Survival Anxiety): Historical high IMR led poor rural parents to have large families to ensure that at least some children survive to adulthood.
  • Poverty and Economic Value of Children: In agrarian and informal economies, extra children were viewed as additional earning hands for family livelihoods.
  • Low Female Literacy & Contraceptive Unmet Need: Limited female decision-making autonomy and lack of access to modern spaced contraceptives in rural belts.
