प्रस्तावना में 'गणराज्य' (Republic) का अर्थ:
- निर्वाचित राष्ट्राध्यक्ष: भारत का राष्ट्राध्यक्ष (राष्ट्रपति) वंशानुगत न होकर एक निश्चित अवधि (5 वर्ष) हेतु जनता द्वारा अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से निर्वाचित होता है।
- लोक संप्रभुता: राजनीतिक संप्रभुता किसी एक व्यक्ति में न होकर जनता में निहित है तथा सभी सार्वजनिक पद बिना किसी भेदभाव के सभी नागरिकों हेतु खुले हैं।
