Model Answer

Major Areas Affected by Soil Erosion in India:

Soil erosion degrades over 120 million hectares of land in India across distinct geomorphic zones:

  • 1. Chambal Ravines & Yamuna Badlands (Gully Erosion):
    • Covers Madhya Pradesh (Morena, Bhind, Sheopur), Rajasthan (Kota, Dholpur), and UP (Etawah, Agra). Extensive gully erosion has converted >4extmillionhectares>4 ext{ million hectares}>4extmillionhectares into uncultivable badlands (Bihads).
  • 2. Himalayan Foot-Hills and Shiwalik Range:
    • Severe sheet, rill, and landslide erosion in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand due to steep slopes, seismic instability, and deforestation (forming seasonal torrents called Chos in Punjab).
  • 3. Western Ghats & North-Eastern Hilly States:
    • Torrential rainfall (>250extcm>250 ext{ cm}>250extcm) combined with traditional slash-and-burn Jhum cultivation on deforested hill slopes in Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland causes catastrophic topsoil loss.
  • 4. Arid and Semi-Arid North-Western Belts (Wind Erosion):
    • Thar Desert of Western Rajasthan, south-western Haryana, and Saurashtra (Gujarat) where scorching summer dust storms blow away fertile topsoil.
  • 5. Black Soil Undulating Plateau Belts (Sheet Erosion):
    • Malwa, Marathwada, and Vidarbha undulating basalt plateau slopes during monsoonal cloudbursts.
