The Treaty of Mandsaur (6 January 1818):

Signed between the Holkar State of Indore (Malhar Rao Holkar II) and the British East India Company (Sir John Malcolm), following the decisive British victory in the Battle of Mahidpur (21 Dec 1817) during the Third Anglo-Maratha War:

• Major Crippling Conditions:
  • Holkars surrendered all sovereign claims and suzerainty over the Rajput states (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota).
  • Ceded all territories south of the Satpura Range (including Khandesh) to the British.
  • Accepted a British Subsidiary Force stationed at Mhow Cantonment (Indore) and a permanent British Resident at Indore Durbar.
  • Recognized British ally Amir Khan as the sovereign Nawab of Tonk.
• Impact: Stripped the Holkars of sovereign military power, making Indore a subordinate princely state under British paramountcy and shifting the capital permanently from Maheshwar to Indore.
