Comprehensive Note on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Burden, Risk Factors and Control Strategy

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic lifestyle diseases, are medical conditions that are non-infectious, cannot be transmitted directly from one person to another, and are typically of long duration with slow progression.

1. The Four Major Categories of NCDs (WHO):

  • 1. Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs): Coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes (leading cause of NCD mortality).
  • 2. Cancers: Oral, lung, breast, and cervical cancers.
  • 3. Chronic Respiratory Diseases: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Asthma.
  • 4. Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 diabetes causing microvascular and macrovascular complications.

2. Major Modifiable & Non-Modifiable Risk Factors:

  • Behavioral Factors: Tobacco consumption (smoking and smokeless), harmful alcohol use, unhealthy diets (high salt, trans-fats, refined sugars), and physical inactivity (sedentary lifestyle).
  • Metabolic Factors: Elevated blood pressure, overweight/obesity, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia.
  • Environmental Factors: Ambient air pollution and occupational chemical exposures.

3. India's Public Health Response & Strategies:

  • 1. National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCDs (NP-NCD): Decentralized screening, diagnosis, and treatment infrastructure from primary to tertiary healthcare levels.
  • 2. Ayushman Bharat - Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs): Universal population-based screening for hypertension, diabetes, and oral/breast/cervical cancers for individuals aged 30+ years.
  • 3. Regulatory & Preventive Interventions: Eat Right India campaign (FSSAI trans-fat regulations), 85% pictorial health warnings on tobacco products (COTPA Act), and promotion of Yoga and physical fitness (Fit India Movement).

(Risk Factors):
