Model Answer

Thyroid Gland: Anatomy, Endocrine Secretions, and Clinical Pathologies:

  1. Anatomical Architecture:
    • The largest dedicated endocrine gland in the human body, situated anterior to the trachea in the lower neck. Characterized by a bilobed butterfly / 'H'-shaped morphology linked across the midline by an isthmus.
  2. Hormonal Secretions and Metabolic Functions:
    • 1. Tetraiodothyronine (T₄ / Thyroxine) and Triiodothyronine (T₃):
      • Synthesized by iodination of tyrosine within follicular colloid (governed by pituitary TSH).
      • Function: Drives the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), cellular oxygen consumption, thermogenesis, neurodevelopment, and macronutrient turnover.
    • 2. Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin): Peptide hormone secreted by parafollicular C-cells; acts as a physiological antagonist to parathyroid hormone (PTH) to lower serum calcium levels by promoting bone deposition.
  3. Pathological Disorders:
    • (A) Hypothyroidism:
      • Endemic Simple Goitre: Compensatory follicular hypertrophy due to nutritional iodine deficiency.
      • Congenital Hypothyroidism (Cretinism): Severe pediatric mental retardation and stunted skeletal growth.
      • Myxedema: Adult lethargy, cold intolerance, dry skin, and bradycardia.
      • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Autoimmune destruction of follicular architecture.
    • (B) Hyperthyroidism:
      • Graves' Disease (Exophthalmic Goitre): Autoimmune thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins inducing thyrotoxicosis, tachycardia, dramatic weight loss, and ocular proptosis.

(Disorders):
    • (A) अल्पस्रावण (Hypothyroidism):
(Hyperthyroidism):
