Model Answer

Definition of Weathering and Driving Mechanisms of Physical Weathering:

  1. Definition of Weathering:
    • The in-situ (static) mechanical disintegration and chemical decomposition of rocks at or near the Earth's surface caused by exposure to atmospheric elements (temperature, moisture, frost) and biological activity, without direct physical transport.
  2. Mechanisms of Physical / Mechanical Weathering:
    • (A) Diurnal Insolation Cycles (Differential Thermal Expansion):
      • In arid deserts, extreme diurnal temperature ranges cause rapid expansion of outer mineral grains by day and contraction by night. Unequal stress induces concentric spalling known as Exfoliation (Onion Peeling).
    • (B) Frost Wedging (Freeze-Thaw Cryofracturing):
      • In periglacial and alpine zones, water percolates into joint fractures. Freezing at 0°C expands water volume by ~9%, exerting immense tensile pressures exceeding 2,000 kg/cm², shattering rock masses into angular scree/talus blocks.
    • (C) Pressure Release / Unloading (Sheeting & Spalling):
      • Denudation strips overlying rock mass, releasing confining lithostatic overburden pressures on deep-seated plutons (e.g., granite batholiths), triggering parallel curved sheet fracturing.
    • (D) Salt Crystal Growth (Haloclasty):
      • Evaporation of saline solutions in porous rocks deposits salt crystals; subsequent diurnal thermal expansion of crystals exerts disruptive crystallization pressures.
    • (E) Biological Mechanical Wedge Action: Penetrating plant root systems expand within joints, acting as physical wedges prying fractures apart.

(Thermal Expansion & Contraction):
(Frost Action / Freeze-Thaw Wedging):
(Pressure Release / Unloading / Sheeting):
(Salt Crystal Growth / Haloclasty):
