In English (Question & Model Answer)
A Question is given followed by two Statements I and II. Consider the Question and the Statements.
There are three distinct prime numbers whose sum is a prime number.
Question:
What are those three numbers?
Statement-I: Their sum is less than 23.
Statement-II: One of the numbers is 5.
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and the Statements?
Correct Option: (a) The Question can be answered by using one of the Statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other Statement alone
Let the three distinct prime numbers be p, q, and r. Their sum is S = p + q + r, which is also a prime number. Since the minimum sum of three distinct prime numbers is 2 + 3 + 5 = 10, the sum S must be greater than 2. Any prime number greater than 2 is odd. Thus, S must be an odd prime. For the sum of three numbers to be odd, either all three numbers must be odd, or one must be odd and two must be even. Since 2 is the only even prime, we cannot have two even primes. Thus, all three primes p, q, and r must be odd primes. From Statement-I: The sum S is less than 23. Since p, q, and r must be distinct odd primes, the smallest possible odd primes are 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19. Let us find triplets whose sum S is a prime less than 23: 3 + 5 + 7 = 15 (not prime); 3 + 5 + 11 = 19 (prime, < 23); 3 + 5 + 13 = 21 (not prime); 3 + 7 + 11 = 21 (not prime); 5 + 7 + 11 = 23 (not less than 23). The only possible triplet is {3, 5, 11}. Thus, Statement-I alone is sufficient. Statement-II alone is not sufficient since many triplets with 5 have prime sums. Hence, the correct option is (a).
